Social Work
This course aims at the training of a capable professional, according to the international definition elaborated by the International Association of Schools of Social Work and by the International Federation of Social Workers, to promote social change, the solution of problems in human relations and capacity and the freedom of people to develop their own well-being; the one in Siena is also the first degree course in Social Work Sciences established in Italy in 1956 and boasts a long tradition both in terms of teaching quality and the results of research carried out by its teachers.

Non-EU citizens are invited to contact the Italian Diplomatic Representation of their countries as soon as possible in order to obtain all the required documents for the pre-enrollment at the University of Siena and for information regarding the VISA process.

Language requirements
English knowledge
The University of Siena requires all students to pass an English language exam, B1 level, which is also important for those wishing to participate in Erasmus exchange programs at English-speaking universities. This eligibility must be demonstrated by a qualifying examination administered by the Language Center.
Knowledge of the Italian Language
The Italian Language knowledge test is mandatory for every non EU candidate resident abroad wishing to enroll in a course taught in Italian, who does not posses a language certification that would be a waiver of the test.

Program delivery
In addition to in-presence teaching, which continues to be the preferred method also in the next Academic Year, every single lesson will be simultaneously live-streamed and/or video recorded and uploaded on our digital platform for subsequent viewing. This mode is essential for students who are temporarily unable to be on premises.

Career paths
The Degree Course in Social Work is aimed at training graduates for the social worker professionalism. The social worker works closely with people or families in serious situations of social hardship and / or vulnerability, also carrying out preventive activities. The categories that usually benefit from this professionalism are minors, the elderly, drug addicts, the disabled and immigrants.
Before passing a State exam, the three-year graduate in Social Work can enroll in the professional category B, and therefore exercise the profession of social worker. The registration to the Register also includes the performance of a professional activity.
Social workers can work both in the public and private sectors with activities that can range from the functions of social worker to more organizational and coordination tasks. In particular it is possible to find employment in ministries, hospitals, local health centers, private clinics, family houses, prisons, reception centers, children’s courts, addiction centers, as well as in research activities (ie universities and research institutes).
Typical areas of work are hospitals and public health local units, municipalities and their consortia, the external penal execution office and the social service office for minors of the Ministry of Justice and all the bodies and institutions that use the professionalism of ‘Social worker; moreover, social workers are increasingly required by the non-profit sector (for example in social cooperatives) in the management of health and care homes, day care centers, family houses, etc.
