Tourism Management

How do you give people a super holiday while taking into account the consequences of tourism for nature and local residents? Tourism and recreation businesses face the challenge of maintaining their position in the fast-paced world of e-business. It requires traditional companies to develop new products and alternative customer approaches. Admission requirements

An equivalent of the Dutch diplomas of higher general secondary education (havo) or pre-university level (vwo) is generally required to enrol on a study program at Breda University of Applied Sciences

English language requirements

You will also be required to demonstrate sufficient results on one of these tests:

  • Cambridge C1 Advanced/ Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), with a minimum subscore for Speaking of 169
  • Cambridge C2 Advanced/ Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, with a minimum subscore for Speaking of 169
  • IELTS test (minimum overall band score of 6.0, and minimum subscore of 6.0 for speaking)
  • TOEFL test (minimum score of 80 internet-based, and minimum subscore of 20 for speaking)

3-year track

If your secondary school diploma is comparable to the Dutch vwo-diploma, you may be eligible for admission into the three-year track.

Program content

Year 1

Year 1 consists of twelve course modules that make up the core of the study program. These modules focus on the travel industry and tourism destinations, in which you will address topics such as e-business, marketing, research, financial management, and consumer behaviour.

Year 2

Year 2 consists of twelve course modules: six general modules and six modules which relate specifically to the area of specialisation (track) you have chosen to explore. The six general modules will be Online Consumer Behaviour 2, Change Management, Smart Organisation, Experience Design 2, Online Marketing & Communication 2 and Financial Management. In addition, you will take English, one other foreign language course and Personal and Professional Development. In this year, you will choose one of the following four tracks:

  • Travel Industry
  • Recreation & Hospitality
  • Tourism Destinations
  • Attractions & Theme Parks Management

Year 3

In this year, you will choose one of the following areas of specialisation:

  • E-Tourism
  • Tourism Design & Development
  • Tourism Business
  • Tourist Experience

Year 4

In the fourth year of your studies, you will choose a minor to either start gaining more in-depth knowledge of your area of specialisation (Year 3) or choose to broaden your knowlegde, which will be followed by a graduation track during which you will write a thesis. Every area of specialisation offers a number of deepening course modules. In addition, you will work on a practical assignment for a commissioner in the Tourism Impact Lab during three terms, where innovation and impact are central.

Three-year tracks

If you have graduated from vwo (pre-university education) and meet the admission requirements, you may qualify for the three-year Tourism Management track (accelerated program). If you have a hbo or wo (higher professional/academic education) (propaedeutic) certificate or degree of an economic degree program, you may also qualify for this accelerated track.

Tuition

In the academic year 2022-2023 the statutory tuition fee for bachelor's programmes is €2,209. First-year's students pay €1,105.

You pay the statutory tuition fee if you:

  • have the Dutch nationality or the nationality of another country that is part of the EEA, or the Surinamese or Swiss nationality and
  • have not already obtained a bachelor's degree from a government-funded program in the Netherlands at the start of the academic year.

In all other cases you pay the institutional tuition fee. In the academic year 2022-2023 the institutional fee for bachelor's programmes is €10,400.

Qualification

After graduation from this economically oriented Tourism Management program you will be entitled to call yourself a Bachelor of Arts.

Continuing studies

Once you have earned your bachelor's degree, you may choose to continue on a master's program at Breda University of Applied Sciences or on a master's program abroad.

Growth in international tourism is so enormous that tourism itself has evolved into an engine of the world's economy. Tourism as a worldwide phenomenon is closely connected and intertwined with major global changes in culture, politics, technology, economics and the environment.
